retro royale

After a rather awful week battling a sudden bout of sickness I'm feeling better and looking forward to some of the best burgers in town at Royale Eatery tonight. While the street level section has always been a feast for the eyes, it's the upstairs reservations-only section that I love most. Something about the 50s-style red-leather booths, vintage sheet music wallpaper and hanging birdcages makes me feel right at home. And as a recent vegetarian convert, you just can't beat Royale's extensive vegetarian burger selection!

Happy Weekend!

live the language

I happened upon this delightful promotional video for a language school in Paris. Not only is the mise-en-scène completely charming, but it's also accompanied by an assortment of wonderful typography. I'm a sucker for type, and well, all things French, so this little video completely made my week.

Happy Weekend!

smell the roses

Now that we're pretty sure next year is the year we immigrate, we've been thinking a lot about the things we haven't seen or done in Cape Town. I've lived here since 1994 and surprisingly it's only in the last 5 years that I've truly explored the city I live in. Tourist attractions aside, there hasn't been a whole lot left to experience but I have managed to make a small list of unique adventures for us to do over the coming months. The first of which was rose picking at Chart Farm.

I'd always wanted to do this and yesterday I was determined to wake up early and head out to Wynberg where the farm overlooks the Constantia Hills.

Turns out Sunday is a great day for rose picking, as stems are half price at just R2 a rose! I hand-selected 22 roses from the overgrown aisles, just as the morning sun broke through the early haze and began to bathe the farm in a sweet warm light. The soft smell of roses wafts around you on the gentle breeze while fellow rose pickers trod down the paths nearby in search of the perfect bloom.

Looking now at the small arrangement of carefully chosen roses on my desk, I'm already looking forward to visiting again!

autumn walks

As a cold climate lover I've been pleased with the recent spout of wet weather. There's something about the misty breath, cozy fabrics and hot beverages that makes me feel so completely comfortable in winter. Perhaps it's my European heritage, or fond memories growing up in the snow-covered streets of Portland, but winter holds a special place in my heart.

Last weekend we strolled the stormy promenade, gloved hand in hand. We passed through the empty puddle-filled park, rounding the lighthouse, stopping briefly to take a seat on a bench between the putt-putt and the sea. The cold biting air reminded me of Paris but the gray waters and salty air kept me rooted at home.

On the work front the husband and I have made some progress on another project. It seems my penchent for design and his development skills were a match made in start-up heaven. Four years ago I'd have never had said that one of our greatest strengths would be our ability to work together. While it's another work in progress, much like everything else, I can only feel more excited about the months to come and the success they may hold.

From my side I added a new design to the shop earlier this week! Inspired by the beautiful Laduree packaging, my Patisserie suite pays homage to the delightful French brand. Click here to see the suit in the shop!

the printerie is open

I am delighted to announce that the first series of products are now finally available for purchase from my new Etsy store, The Printerie! All my stationery designs are digital, meaning they can be printed at home or anywhere in the world. It's an affordable alternative for those looking for good quality stationery design at a fraction of the cost. In the coming months I plan to add an assortment of designs, covering everything from weddings to personal calling cards and notes.

I'll be uploading new products every week so be sure to keep an eye out for them! Click here to go to the shop and see what I've been working on.
